This inspiration of this work comes from the design of ancient Chinese coinage, which is a round metal coin with a square hold in the middle. It is an illustration of an Ancient Chinese concept "the Unity of Heaven and Earth (天人合一)" and its cosmic view—Round Heaven and Square Earth (天圓地方). The work is a spiral formed from the interconnection of three circles of different sizes, each circle has a square hole that interconnect with one another, illustrating a concept in the Classic of Change, "…an unobstructed course leads to sustainability (通則達)".
